Celebrity IP Edition: Evicting Celebrity Cyber-squatters

It's hard to be a celebrity these days. Not only can one's name, image, or signature be used inappropriately and without permission. But now, fraudulently using celebrity names on trademark-infringing domains is big business!


What do Madonna, Julia Roberts, Pierce Brosnan, and now Scarlett Johansson have in common? They're among the many celebrities whose famous names have been hijacked by cyber-squatters – people who buy famous-sounding web domains to benefit from the related publicity. In fact, according to a post at the traverselegal blog, madonna.com, juliaroberts.com and piercebrosnan.com have all appeared in cyber-squatting cases (now rising to record levels) before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
