SAN FRANCISCO, CA AND TOKYO, JAPAN - Palamida, and Osaka Gas Information System Research Institute (OGIS-RI), announced a joint partnership to deliver open source management solutions for Intellectual Property (IP) compliance to the Japanese market. According to a press release by Palamida, OGIS' strength in providing leading-edge technology solutions and services coupled with Palamida's software risk management solutions enables customers to respond in real-time to IP violations related to the unknown misuse of open source software components inside enterprise applications. "The relationship with OGIS-RI is a milestone for Palamida," CEO of Palamida Mark Tolliver said. “The Japanese software industry continues to grow rapidly, driven by the increased dependence on software for advanced features in consumer and industrial products,” he added. “Our experience clearly suggests that Japanese organizations recognize both the benefits and risks associated with the use of open source,” Tolliver continued. “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with a market leader such as OGIS-RI in building an open source management and compliance practice that extends our domain expertise to this large and fast-moving market," he pointed out. The importance of managing open source use, license challenges, and IP violations is critical to the Japanese market. Open source can be found in the majority of consumer and industrial products (such as toys and electronic goods), as well as mission critical applications throughout Japanese organizations. "It is a great pleasure for us to have Palamida as a partner in intellectual property management," Director of OGIS-RI Asanobu Yamasaki noted. The increased interest in IP and management stems from the continued growth of the embedded systems market. Japanese market data shows that nearly 40% of large scale embedded systems utilize open source software. According to a recent study released by the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA), software development costs for embedded systems reached 3.27 trillion yen, or $28 billion in 2005, a 19.8% increase over 2004, with ongoing growth predicted to continue 20% year over year. Palamida offers market leading solutions and services that accelerate the adoption of open source within the enterprise environment by eliminating legal and vulnerability concerns associated with its use. As a pioneer and a leader of Model Based Development, and the first to introduce of Unified Modeling Language (UML) in Japan, OGIS-RI's services and solutions have consistently contributed to upgrading the software quality in both the enterprise and embedded systems markets.
