Rewarding the Best Thinkers in Trademarks

The 2008-2009 Ladas Memorial Award competition is underway! Supported by Ladas & Parry LLP and the INTA Foundation, the Award memorializes distinguished practitioner and lawyer Stephen P. Ladas and seeks to further develop interest and understanding of trademarks and trademark law.

No Free Parking: Obtaining Relief from Trademark-Infringing Domain Name ParkingConfusion Over Use: Contextualism in Trademark Law...The Extraterritorial Application of the Lanham Act: The First Circuit Cuts the Fat from the Vanity Fair Test…The Normative Foundations of Trademark Law…these are just some of the winning entries of past Ladas Memorial Award competitions.

The competition, open all U.S. and international students, practitioners and academics interested in trademarks and trademark law, aims to provide an incentive to further develop interest in the field of trademarks and to enhance the general understanding of this discipline. Presented once a year in two author categories – Student and Professional – the Award is given to the best paper in each category that is judged best on the subject of trademark law or a matter that directly relates to or affects trademarks. Papers will be judged on the nature, breadth and timeliness of subject(s) addressed; originality of subject and of thought; extent of research and scholarship; and quality of writing.

To compete in the Student Category, authors must be enrolled as either full or part-time law or graduate school students. For students outside of the United States, university enrollment is acceptable. To compete in the Professional Category, authors may be legal practitioners, business professionals and / or academics. There are no restrictions regarding level of experience or years in practice.

To qualify for the Award, entries must:

  • Delve on trademark law or a matter that directly relates to or affects trademarks.
  • Include both original unpublished manuscripts and published articles that are submitted or otherwise come to the attention of INTA by January 16, 2009. Published articles must have been first published no longer than one year prior to the January deadline.
  • Be written in the English language or be accompanied by a translation in the English language. Handwritten papers will not be accepted.
  • Include a cover page that lists the title of the paper, the applicant's affiliation and contact information.

Ladas Memorial Award Competition Student and Professional winners will be notified in April 2009. And each receives:

  • A US $2,000 cash award
  • A set of Dr. Ladas's three-volume treatise
  • An invitation to attend the 2009 INTA Gala in Seattle, Washington at INTA's 131st Annual Meeting, where they are recognized before the outstanding volunteers and leaders of the Association. (The Student winner will receive a travel and lodging stipend of $US 1,000 to attend the Gala.)
  • An opportunity to get their winning papers posted on the Academics section of INTA's website and published in the September -October Issue of The Trademark Reporter®, INTA's legal journal

Sponsored by the International Trademark Association (INTA) and supported by the law firm of Ladas & Parry LLP, the Ladas Memorial Award was established in memory of the distinguished practitioner and author Stephen P. Ladas. Mr. Ladas' contributions includes two major books on the subject of intellectual property – The International Protection of Literary and Artistic Property (published in 1938) and Patents, Trademarks and Related Rights - National and International Protection (published in 1975) – as well as participation in the 1958 revision of the Paris Convention as a member of the United States delegation.

The Ladas Memorial Award Competition – a fitting memorial to one of the giants of the IP world and, if past winning entries are any indication of the depth and breadth (and expertise) out there in the trademark world, an event that IP professionals should definitely anticipate.
