Incorporated in 1973 the British Phonographic Industry's (BPI) primary aim is fighting music piracy. Since its founding, the BPI has represented the entire UK record industry. Its membership comprises hundreds of music companies including major record labels, associate members such as manufacturers and distributors, and hundreds of independent music companies representing literally thousands of labels.
The BPI mission is divided into three main components: protection, promotion, and representation. Protection serves as the first key area, ensuring brand protection for its members. The BPI implements protection of patent and copyright laws in various ways including an anti-piracy unit involved in hundreds investigations and raids each year and a legal team which has brought several of its own civil cases against commercial pirates.
