The Politics of Copyright
Another unpleasant interface between politics and intellectual property recently occurred when the rock band, Heart, demanded that the McCain campaign stop playing their song, Barracuda, in honor of VP nominee Sara Palin at political rallies. But the GOP event that featured this song apparently has a license from ASCAP and didn't need the artists' permission. Slate writer Chris Wilson parses the issue here.
Lesson from a Counterfeiter
Caveat emptor – This was a counterfeiter's response when caught selling a fake "Patek Philippe" watch that was supposedly worth $20,000. A most fitting lesson for the counterfeiting victim…a fifth-generation jeweler whose family has been in the business for almost a century but was still conned anyway. Free Licenses Upheld
America's "IP court" – the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit – recently upheld a free copyright license. Citing Creative Commons as a model, the court ruled that the free licenses set conditions (rather than covenants) on the use of a copyrighted work. Read all about it here.
